What is a Pre-Employment Hearing Test?

It is a comprehensive assessment completed before starting employment. It establishes a baseline record and helps determine whether an applicant can safely perform the hearing-related requirements of a role. The baseline also supports future comparison if occupational noise exposure occurs.

Who needs a pre-employment assessment?

Testing is commonly requested for jobs involving noise, communication systems, warning alarms, moving vehicles, machinery or other safety-critical listening tasks.

Many employers include hearing assessment within a broader pre-employment medical.

What does the assessment include?

Your clinician reviews previous hearing concerns, occupational noise exposure, medical and ear health, earlier results, hearing-protection use and current symptoms.

What does it measure?

PTA measures hearing sensitivity from approximately 250 Hz to 8000 Hz—the range covering sounds most important for everyday communication.

What happens during the test?

You wear specialised headphones in a sound-treated room and respond whenever you hear tones at different frequencies and volumes. Testing is straightforward, painless and adjusted to any specific employer requirements.

Baseline testing
The result becomes an accurate reference point before workplace noise exposure begins, enabling future tests to identify change over time.

Preparing for your hearing test

A few simple steps help ensure the test reflects your true hearing ability and produces a reliable employment baseline.

If hearing loss is identified

Hearing loss does not automatically prevent someone from working. Many people safely perform their role with appropriate hearing protection, workplace adjustments or hearing devices.

Why choose Welfast Hearing Australia?

We understand the need for timely, accurate occupational assessment and work closely with employers, providers and applicants to support safe, efficient recruitment.
